Cops: Suspects arrested in Hempstead arson
Nassau County police said they arrested a second man on Friday night who was allegedly involved in the arson of a Hempstead apartment building in early September.
Officers from the county's Bureau of Special Operations arrested Harry Gardner, 29, of 750 Jerusalem Ave., in Hempstead, at 9:20 p.m. He is charged with arson and burglary, both in the second degree. His is expected to be arraigned Saturday in First District Court in Hempstead.
On Jan. 1, police arrested Reginald Summers, 19, of 50 Laurel Ave. on the same charges. He was arraigned Jan. 2.
The two men allegedly tried to burglarize an apartment in a residential building at 150 Washington Ave. on Sept. 10 at 7 a.m.
After being unable to gain access to the apartment, they poured an accelerant on the door mat of a different apartment and ignited it, police said. The fire caused minor damage to the door and was extinguished by the Hempstead Fire Department.
There were no injuries reported. Detectives obtained video surveillance of the defendants which led to their arrests, police said.
