Cops: Victim foils knifepoint robbery in Freeport

Nassau County detectives are investigating an attempted robbery Friday morning in Freeport, foiled when the potential victim grabbed an assailant's knife and struck him in the face, knocking him down, Nassau County police said.

The 53-year-old man, standing at Merrick Road and South Main Street at 5 a.m., was approached by four unknown men who demanded his property. When the man refused, one of the men displayed the knife, which the man grabbed before striking the robber.

The four fled on foot with no proceeds. One of them was described as about 25 years old; 5 feet, 2 inches tall; wearing a jeans jacket; and unshaven with a scar on his right forehead.

The 53-year-old was taken to a hospital where he was treated for a cut to his right hand and injured right knee.
