A woman taking a firearms training course accidentally shot herself in the right thigh Wednesday morning at the Nassau County Rifle and Pistol Range, Uniondale, according to Nassau County police and a county spokeswoman.

She was taken to Nassau University Medical Center with a non-life-threatening flesh wound, the spokeswoman said.

Police had earlier indicated the person was a man who shot himself in the foot.

The accident occurred at about 10:40 a.m. when the woman, not a law enforcement officer, was in the process of putting her weapon into the holster, according to the county spokeswoman.

The course was taught by an outside contractor, and the rifle and pistol range "operates standard safety procedures," the spokeswoman said.
