A disturbance call at an apartment in New Hyde Park early Wednesday evening resulted in the arrest of a 21-year-old woman after police said she became "enraged" -- striking a female officer in the eye, then becoming embroiled in a struggle.

Hazel Gutierrez-Torres, of 102 Jericho Tpke., was arrested and charged with second-degree assault after the confrontation at her apartment at 5:33 p.m.

Nassau County police said Gutierrez-Torres and a 24-year-old man were involved in "a disturbance" and that Third Precinct officers responded to the scene. But, police said, as the officers conducted their investigation Gutierrez-Torres became enraged, striking a female officer in the right eye.

"A struggle ensued," police said in a statement, "and both the officer and Gutierrez-Torres fell to the floor causing an injury to the officer's left shoulder." Gutierrez-Torres was arrested at the scene.

Police said the officer, whose identity was not released, was taken to a hospital where she was treated for her injuries and released.

Gutierrez-Torres faces arraignment Thursday in First District Court in Hempstead.
