Cops: Woman beaten, robbed in W. Hempstead

Police are searching for a man who assaulted and robbed a 24-year-old woman outside a West Hempstead furniture store on Friday night, Nassau County police said.

The victim was walking east on Hempstead Turnpike when the man, who appeared to be about 35 years old, demanded money from her while squeezing her arm, police said. He then pushed the victim up against the front window of AMA Furniture Warehouse, at 130 Hempstead Tpke., before hitting her in her head and punching her in the back, police said.

The robber then went through her coat pockets and stole an undetermined amount of cash before getting away on foot, police said.

The victim was taken by the West Hempstead Fire Department to a hospital and treated for bruising.

Detectives are asking anyone with information about the crime to call Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.
