A drug deal gone bad ended with one man being shot in the back by assailants who tried to rob him and his girlfriend late Saturday in Uniondale, Nassau County police said.

Police said the 31-year-old victim, whose identity was not released, was transported to a hospital for treatment of his gunshot wound.

His condition was not immediately known on Monday.

Police said the shooting took place in a car near the intersection of Jaffa Avenue and Uniondale Avenue at about 11:30 p.m. Saturday. The victim told police he had arranged a meeting to sell marijuana from his car, but that when he and his 24-year-old girlfriend arrived, two unknown men "unexpectedly entered the rear of the vehicle" and then demanded "everything you got."

Before the victim could hand over anything, police said there was a gunshot -- and the driver realized he'd been shot.

The suspects, described by police only as males wearing gray hoodies, fled on foot.

No proceeds were taken.

The woman was uninjured.

Police are asking anyone with information regarding the shooting to call Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS. All calls will remain confidential.
