A Freeport man died Saturday morning after he crashed his motorcycle on North Main Street, Nassau police said.
Police said Edgar Menendez, 33, was seen by witnesses driving a 1999 Yamaha motorcycle "at a high rate of speed" heading south on North Main at about 10:20 a.m.
Menendez was trying to change lanes when he hit the rear driver's side corner of the flat bed of a tow truck that was illegally double-parked in the roadway in front of 43 North Main St., police said.VideoMan dead in Freeport motorcycle crash
Menendez suffered chest injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
The tow truck driver was cited for the double-parking violation, police said.
Menendez's family, many of whom live in Athens, Georgia, spent Saturday driving to New York after learning of the accident.
Lisette Menendez, 56, said she plans to bring her son's ashes back to Georgia.
"He was a wonderful person, very nice, very caring. He loved everybody and he did anything he can do for everybody," she said. "If he had a dollar and somebody needed it and that's all he had, he would give it to the person."
