Nassau police have arrested a Hicksville man they said was responsible for the theft of as many as 50 cellphones from a Metro PCS store in his hometown Tuesday.
Second Squad detectives said Edmanual Collado Velez, 28, of Nevada Street was arrested during a brief chase that occurred shortly after the theft was reported at the Metro PCS store on Broadway, police said. The owner reported that someone had smashed in a window of the store and snatched the cellphones at about 2:25 a.m. Tuesday.
A Second Precinct officer spotted a white van fitting the description of a vehicle captured on surveillance video of the burglary, and tried to stop the driver on West John Street in Hicksville. But it drove away toward Prospect Street and was later located on Jericho Turnpike, where the driver crashed the van into a guardrail and fled the wreckage, police said. He was caught and arrested and the cellphones were recovered, police said.
Collado Velez is charged with third-degree burglary, fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, and operating a motor vehicle unlicensed. He was arraigned on Wednesday at First District Court in Hempstead. His attorney could not be reached for comment.
