The owner of an Elmont gas station was arrested Saturday after he charged higher prices at the pump than what he was advertising on his signs, Nassau County police said.

A police officer on patrol noticed that the USA Gas Station at 1616 Dutch Broadway was advertising $3.83 per gallon on the overhead sign but was displaying and charging $4.59 per gallon at the pump, police said.

The officer told the owner, Fouad Elmaria, 74, to correct the price. But when the officer and his supervisor returned several hours later, the change had not been made.

Elmaria, of Rockville Centre, was arrested at 5:20 p.m. and charged with first-degree defraud and false advertising. He was released on an appearance ticket and is scheduled to appear at First District Court in Hempstead on Wednesday.
