A Freeport church is holding a gun buyback program Saturday where anyone turning over an unregistered, working handgun will receive $200 cash -- no questions asked.
The buyback takes place from 9 a.m. to noon in the parking lot at the Perfecting Faith Church at 311 N. Main St. The event is co-sponsored by Nassau County district attorney's office and Nassau County Police Department, along with Freeport Mayor Andrew Hardwick.
People who want to turn in a gun are asked to bring it -- unloaded -- in either a plastic bag, shoe box or, if coming by car, in the vehicle's trunk. No licensed handguns, BB guns, air pistols, long guns or replicas will be accepted, the church said.
Getting illegal guns off the street is a critical public safety issue that should be of concern to everyone, including the church, said Donnie McClurkin, a Grammy-winning gospel singer who is pastor of Perfecting Faith Church. "Just being the church on the corner is not good enough anymore. The church must bring great change and great transformation to the community and people in the community."
