A Town of Hempstead employee was killed Friday morning when two town sanitation trucks collided at an intersection in East Meadow, town officials said.

The worker was identified late Friday afternoon as Jarred Newallo, 25, of Hempstead.

"Today is a very sad day for the Hempstead Town family," Supervisor Kate Murray said in a statement, adding: "A valued member of our workforce who was employed by the township's Sanitation Department was involved in a tragic accident, and has succumbed to his injuries. We are deeply saddened, and the family of the victim is in our thoughts and prayers."

Newallo's Facebook page indicates he had been working for the town for about a year, but that his passion was music. In his spare time, Newallo was a DJ who created original mixes, posting them on websites like YouTube, SoundCloud, and Mixcloud, according to his Facebook page.

Reached Friday evening, Newallo's family did not want to comment.

Nassau County police said the accident occurred at the intersection of Prospect and Chestnut avenues about 9:25 a.m., as one of the garbage trucks attempted to maneuver around a third, uninvolved vehicle -- only to strike the second town sanitation truck.

The fatally injured worker was on the back of one of the trucks that was hit, and suffered "crushing injuries," police said.

The worker was transported to nearby Nassau University Medical Center, where he died of his injuries.

The subsequent accident investigation forced the closure of Prospect between Starke and Maple avenues, as well as Chestnut between Prospect and Nostrand avenues, for about four hours, with the roads reopening just before 2:30 p.m. No criminality is suspected, police said.
