A portion of Long Beach was closed to swimmers Sunday after several jellyfish sightings, city police officials said.

Red jellyfish were spotted along a stretch of water from Edwards Boulevard to Riverside Boulevard, causing the closure about 3 p.m.

Witnesses said swimmers evacuated the water after it took on a reddish tint, but beachgoers mostly remained calm.

A Long Beach police spokeswoman said Sunday there was no clear indication of when the closure would be lifted, noting that it would remain in place as long as the jellyfish were visible.
