A scream from a store clerk scared off two would-be armed robbers at a grocery in Uniondale on Wednesday night, but not before one of them fired a shot, Nassau County police said.

The clerk, identified only as a 67-year-old man, was not injured.

Police said investigators are searching for the pair and are asking anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS. All calls will remain confidential, police said.

Police said the incident occurred at the K & J Grocery on Jerusalem Avenue at 8:18 p.m.

The two men entered the store, displayed a handgun and demanded the store clerk hand over cash. Instead, police said, the man screamed -- and the two robbers fled, one firing a shot. It was not immediately clear if police recovered the bullet or a shell casing.

No cash was taken.
