A Kings Point man has been arrested and charged in connection with what police called "an ongoing scheme" to rent houses -- and not pay rent.
Jerry Hauser, 56, of 8 Catalina Dr, was arrested at his home Monday by the Nassau County police department Crimes Against Property Squad.
He was charged with third-degree and fourth-degree grand larceny, as well as with first-degree defraud. Hauser is scheduled for arraignment Tuesday in First District Court in Hempstead, police said.
Police said that, beginning in March 2010, Hauser rented homes in Jericho, Syosset and Kings Point -- and then failed to pay rent to the landlords.
Instead, police said, Hauser gave those landlords "numerous checks," which then would be returned for insufficient funds. The losses were in excess of $50,000, police said.
Police said Hauser was arrested after an investigation that included an incident on Sept. 26 in Freeport, when he collected a check in the amount of $1,940 payable to a male victim, forged the signature and deposited the check into his own bank account.
