LI hunger-relief groups see rise in demand for food
Quick ReadHunger-relief organizations here are reporting a 30 percent increase in the number of people needing help over last year.
Last year, it took The Interfaith Nutrition Network in Hempstead four days to give away more than 4,000 turkeys. This year, it took just four hours.
The INN distributed even more the next day and, since then, has received donations of about 300 additional turkeys. Communications director Cynthia Sucich said Monday those may be gone by now, too - snapped up by people waiting in hours-long lines.
