A person was killed after being struck by a train on the Long Island Rail Road tracks about 10:30 p.m. Sunday, a LIRR spokesman said.

The person was struck just east of the Mineola train station, at the Willis Avenue crossing, the spokesman said. The crash resulted in a partial suspension of service between Jamaica and Hicksville on the railroad's Port Jefferson, Oyster Bay and Ronkonkoma branches, LIRR officials said.

But railroad officials said at 11:50 p.m. that they were using one track on the mainline, and were operating in single-track mode at reduced speed until the scene of the strike was cleared by local police.

The train that struck the pedestrian was the westbound train that left Ronkonkoma at 9:40 p.m. and was due in Penn Station at 10:59 p.m.

The investigation was continuing, in conjunction with Nassau County police.
