The death of a man hit and killed Wednesday night by a train at the Merillon Avenue station in Garden City is being investigated as a suicide, the Long Island Rail Road said.

A spokeswoman for the commuter service said Thursday Metropolitan Transportation Authority police identified the victim as a man, 31, from Mineola.

He was struck at 9:15 p.m. by a train headed to Jamaica from Oyster Bay.

One of the train's cars reached the station platform, allowing LIRR riders to leave, according to the rail service.

About six trains were held for about 30 minutes. Trains started moving again at 9:51 p.m., but there were residual delays on the Port Jefferson, Ronkonkoma, Montauk and Oyster Bay branches.
