The Hempstead Town Board approved a zoning change Tuesday to rezone a residential district in Malverne so a developer can build 12 townhouses.

Franklin Square-based R&B Acquisitions & Development applied to build the townhouses on a 1-acre property east of Hempstead Avenue and north of Atlas Court.

Plans for the town house project include a 26,000 square-foot development with 35 parking spaces.

Several residents and village officials had previously opposed the project citing concerns for increased traffic and density in the village.

Hempstead Board members voted to approve the zoning change 4-0 with Councilman Anthony D’Esposito abstaining because he was not yet on the board when developers made their presentation in January.
