A pedestrian who was struck and killed by a passing motorist lay undiscovered on the side of the road in Yaphank for 10 hours, police said Monday, because their search for him was concentrated in the wrong area.

The body of Elmer Mendez, 32, of Shirley, was discovered at 8 a.m. Monday, on Montauk Highway in Yaphank, Suffolk police said.

Kevin Daly, 19, of Mastic Beach, reported to police that he had struck something, possibly a deer, about 10 p.m. Sunday, police said. Officers searched the location that Daly gave, police said, but he had apparently mistakenly given police the wrong location.

A passing motorist reported seeing a body face down in the brush alongside Montauk Highway in Yaphank at about 8 a.m. Monday, police said, about a quarter-mile from the location reported by Daly.

Detectives ask that anyone with information about this incident call Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS.
