Motorcyclist killed in crash with school bus, police say
A 27-year-old man was killed Monday morning after the motorcycle he was riding collided with a school bus carrying almost two dozen children at an intersection in Baldwin, Nassau County police said.
Diony Antonio Lopez, of Freeport, was pronounced dead after being transported to South Nassau Communities Hospital in Oceanside, police said.
The 64-year-old female bus driver, whose identity was not released, was transported to a hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries. Police said none of the bus passengers -- 23 children, ages 5-14 -- were injured in the crash.
Carolyn Daly, spokeswoman for Atlantic Express Transportation, which owns the bus, said the company doesn't yet plan to issue a formal statement because the collision is under investigation, but noted the bus had no defects. "That's about all I can say," she said.
The crash occurred at 7:57 a.m. at the intersection of Merrick Road and Lancaster Avenue. Police said the 2012 Honda was eastbound on Merrick when the bus turned from southbound Lancaster onto eastbound Merrick.
Police said additional details were not immediately available and that the investigation into the cause of the accident was continuing.
