As of Tuesday morning, 19 Nassau County beaches have been closed to bathing, this as a result of the area's heavy rainfall, according to a release from the county health department.

The step is precautionary, as storm water runoff can raise bacterial levels, the release said. Barring further heavy rain or the presence of elevated bacterial levels, the beaches will be re-opened in 24 hours, the time it takes for two tidal cycles, said Mary Ellen Laurain, health department spokeswoman.

North Shore beaches closed are: Centre Island Sound, Creek Club, Lattingtown Beach, Laurel Hollow Beach, Morgan Sound, North Hempstead Beach Park, Piping Rock Beach Club, Prybil Beach, Ransom Beach, Roosevelt Beach, Sea Cliff Village Beach, Soundside Beach, Stehli Beach and Tappen Beach.
