Four Nassau County beaches that were closed over the weekend in the wake of heavy rain were reopened Sunday, the Nassau County health department said.

Biltmore Beach Club, Hewlett Point Beach, Island Park Beach and Merrick Estates Civic Association beach all were closed Saturday as a precaution after heavy rain. County officials said storm water runoff from rainfall can lead to elevated bacterial levels at beaches.

On Sunday, all Nassau County beaches that are operating for the 2014 season were open, with the exception of Philip Healey Beach in Massapequa. That beach remains closed due to high levels of bacteria, officials said.

The county runs a hotline that includes recorded information on beach closings and openings at 516-227-9700.
