Newsday lays off nearly 50 workers, closes a building

Newsday announced Thursday that it is laying off about 50 people and is closing one of its buildings in Melville as it continues to try to find ways to save money.
In an e-mail to employees, Publisher Terry Jimenez said 13 union jobs in transportation and maintenance will be eliminated, and about 35 employees in other departments were told their jobs are being cut.
