A California man fatally shot his estranged wife's boyfriend early Friday in a bedroom of her Valley Stream home, Nassau County police said.
Deon Ewers, 50, of Los Angeles, fled the rental home at 26 East Hawthorne Ave. after shooting the victim multiple times with a semiautomatic handgun, police said.
Authorities were continuing to search for Ewers Friday night.
"This is a targeted event, and not a random event," said Det. Lt. Richard LeBrun.
Ewers' 53-year-old wife and their 14-year-old son were inside the home at the time of the shooting shortly before 7 a.m., but neither was injured, police said.
She called 911, and responding officers found the 34-year-old victim in a second-floor bedroom, according to police.
The victim, who has not been identified, was taken to South Nassau Communities Hospital in Oceanside where he was pronounced dead about an hour later, police said.
He was visiting the home at the time of the shooting and had been dating Ewers' wife, police said.
Ewers and his wife married on May 8, 1991, in Miami-Dade County, Florida, records show.
About three years ago, police were called after the couple had an argument at the Valley Stream home, authorities said.
LeBrun said the couple separated about a year ago and, records show, Ewers later moved to California. Authorities believe Ewers flew to Long Island on Thursday night.
Ewers "should be considered armed and dangerous," LeBrun said.
Police would not discuss a motive or say how Ewers gained access to the home. He has no prior criminal record, police said.
