A man was shot in Hempstead early this evening under circumstances that are still unclear as police from Hempstead Village and Nassau County continue to investigate.

Police confirmed a man was shot about 5:15 p.m. near a strip mall at Jerusalem Avenue and Henry Street, but released no other details.

"A male was shot in stomach and taken to a local hospital," Lt. Edward Hayman of Hempstead Village police said. He would not identify the shooting victim. He said the shooting was being investigated by Nassau police Third Squad detectives and village police.

A man working at a pizza shop on Henry Street near the shooting scene said the shooting occurred at a home next door to Pizzatini.

"I didn't see anything, I just heard the shots," he said.

Bonnie Bahn, proprietor of Bonnie Happy Nails next door to the pizza shop, said she didn't see anything either, but heard "shooting sounds and the police cars and everything."
