A Nassau County officer injured his knee struggling with an Island Park youth Thursday after police tried to check the man for a weapon, Fourth Squad detectives said.

Police responded to a call at 11:47 p.m. about a disturbance at 58 Parma Rd. and were told that Kevin Chavez, 17, possibly possessed a weapon, according to a news release.

When police tried to check him, Chavez "became combative and struggled," the release said. "He ignored verbal commands while flailing his arms and eventually held his arms firmly into his chest refusing to be handcuffed."
