Hit by heavy rains overnight, Nassau County announced the closing of 16 North Shore beaches and four South Shore beaches to bathing Friday, the county health officials said.

The closings are precautionary, health officials said, since storm-water runoff can have "a negative impact" on water quality - the result of elevated bacteria levels in the runoff.

The South Shore beaches closed to bathing are Biltmore Beach Club; Hewlett Point Beach; Island Park Beach; and Philip Healey Beach.

The North Shore beaches closed to bathing are: Bar Beach; Centre Island Bay; Centre Island Sound; Creek Club; Laurel Hollow; Lattingtown Beach; Morgan Sound; Piping Rock Beach Club; Pryibil Beach; Ransom Beach; Roosevelt Beach; Sea Cliff Village Beach; Soundside Beach; Stehli Beach; Tappen Beach; and West Harbor Beach. In addition, officials said Crescent Beach in Glen Cove remains closed.

For more information on beach closings, call 516-227-9717 weekdays between 9 a.m. and 4:45 p.m.
