A retired doctor neighbors said was forced to work in a Soviet coal mine before coming to America in the 1960s died in a fire in his Hewlett home early Thursday.

Adam Rafalowicz, 86, was found dead in a second-floor bathroom following a "very severe" fire that destroyed his bedroom, also on the second floor, officials said.
