Officials are advising motorists Friday to avoid Merrick Avenue in Merrick because the road will be closed for the wake of slain Nassau County Police Officer Arthur Lopez.

Drivers can also expect Merrick Road to be closed in Baldwin for funeral services Saturday -- police advising of "extensive" delays in the area.

Lopez, a decorated Emergency Services Unit officer from Babylon Village, was shot and killed Tuesday morning in the line of duty during a traffic stop on the Nassau-Queens border.

The wake will take place at the Merrick Fire Department on Friday and drivers can expect Merrick Avenue to be closed between Sunrise Highway and Kirkwood Avenue starting at about 1:30 p.m. The afternoon wake session will take place from 2 to 4 p.m.

Starting at 5 p.m. police said Merrick Avenue will be closed between Sunrise and Merrick Road -- and drivers are advised to avoid the area because of predicted delays.

The evening wake session is scheduled from 7 to 9 p.m.

Police said they are still finalizing road closure plans for the Saturday funeral, which will be held at noon at St. Christopher's Roman Catholic Church in Baldwin. Police said Merrick Road will be closed near Grand Avenue, and closures on Merrick Road will likely extend for a mile or more in each direction -- though no formal announcement has been made.

Drivers are being warned of "extensive delays" due to the funeral Mass, and police said vehicles in the closed-down area will not be allowed to be moved during the closure.
