Rockville Centre Village officials are testing water wells this week after iron was found in the resident water supply.
The village removed Tank No. 1, near South Side High School, to be rehabilitated and painted, leading water to be taken from other wells. Officials said the water supply from the Maple Avenue wells led to a higher iron concentration than other wells.
Rockville Centre officials said daily testing established by the Department of Health determined that the water is safe to drink, cook with and bathe in. Village officials said iron is harmless if consumed.
The village has reversed the water flow from the main system, resulting in loose particles built up over the year that causes discoloring.
The Department of Health has been conducting additional testing before Labor Day. Officials said Tank No. 1 will be reinstated once the results are returned.
