Selden man calls for help from sailboat, police say

By air and sea, the U.S. Coast Guard and other agencies were searching Sunday night for a missing boater near Jacobs Point in Riverhead.

Ciro Stellgas, 59, of Selden, called Riverhead police about 12:16 p.m. to report his 26-foot sailboat was taking on water about three miles north of Jacobs Point, according to a Coast Guard news release and Riverhead police.

Coast Guard search teams from Cape Cod, Mass., New Haven, Conn., and New London, Conn., joined the Riverhead, Wading River and Southold police departments in the search..

The Suffolk County police Marine and Air Division also is assisting in the search, which earlier Sunday included the use of a Coast Guard helicopter, an 87-foot patrol boat and two 45-foot rescue boats.

As of 11:30 p.m. a Coast Guard spokesman said the 87-foot patrol boat would remain in the area overnight searching for the missing vessel.

Riverhead police officials said Stellgas sailed from James Creek on the Peconic Bay on Thursday, heading to Port Washington aboard his sailboat named MAC with New York State registration number NY7059FR.
