A take on a popular Brooklyn food attraction is expected to help kick-start a plan to revitalize Jones Beach State Park, the state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation said Friday.
SmorgasBar: Brooklyn by the Beach, an outdoor food court, is expected to open Memorial Day weekend at the long-dormant site of the old restaurant at the park's main entrance, the agency said.
SmorgasBar, featuring four to five food-and-beverage vendors, will be a one-year pilot venture and include large tents for shade and dining, and a sand play area with pingpong, boccie and horseshoes, the agency said.
The concession area is a partnership with Brooklyn Flea, which runs the popular Smorgasburg food market at East River State Park in Williamsburg. Four established eateries from the Brooklyn site will be staples at Jones Beach -- Handsome Hank's Fish Hut, Home Frite, Rubirosa and Summers, the state said. A fifth vendor will rotate each month of the summer.
SmorgasBar is part of a $25 million improvement plan for 11 Long Island state parks to be funded over the next year. The plan includes $10 million for the first year of a five-year, $65 million Jones Beach revitalization initiative.
From Memorial Day weekend through June 16, SmorgasBar will be open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. After that, it will be open daily through Labor Day, officials said.
