Officers searching for a suspect wanted in a gas station robbery arrested a New Hyde Park man Tuesday after finding him on a street not far from the crime scene in Roslyn Heights, Nassau police said.
Matthew Williams, 23, of 502 6th Ave., was arrested by Third Precinct officers and charged with first-degree robbery and third-degree robbery. He was scheduled for arraignment Wednesday in First District Court in Hempstead.
Police said that Williams entered a Citgo gas station on Powerhouse Road just after 2:30 p.m. Tuesday and, with a hand in his pocket simulating possession of a gun, ordered the 49-year-old attendant to hand over cash. The attendant complied, police said.
Police said Williams then fled on foot.
Responding officers canvassed the area and found Williams, who they said matched the suspect description, walking near the rear of a building on Parkside Drive. He was then arrested. No weapon was found, police said.
It was not immediately clear how much was taken -- or if money was recovered.
No injuries were reported.
