Suspect sought in gas station robberies

Police are searching for a man who they said robbed businesses in Farmingdale, Levittown and Hicksville within a 20-minute span early Friday.

The robber was armed with a black handgun and demanded cash, but also stole cigarettes -- and, during one of the robberies, cigars, police said.

Nassau County police said detectives are attempting to determine if the robberies are related to a recent string of similar robberies in Nassau.

The robberies Friday occurred between 3:25 a.m. and 3:45 a.m., police said, starting at a USA Gas station on Fulton Street in Farmingdale.

The robber, described as being in his mid-to-late 20s or early 30s, about 5-foot-7 with a slim build and wearing a black hooded jacket, walked into the station, produced the handgun, got cash -- and fled on foot.

About 15 minutes later, police said, a similar robbery occurred at an Exxon station on Hempstead Turnpike in Levittown. There, the robber made off with cash, cigarettes and cigars. Five minutes after that, a similar robbery occurred at a 7-Eleven store on Jerusalem Avenue in Hicksville, police said. Again, the robber stole cash and cigarettes.

No one was injured in any of the robberies, police said.

Police are asking anyone with information about the robberies to call Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS. All calls will remain confidential.
