A 19-year-old man in Uniondale was arrested Saturday for weapon possession after he fled on foot with a gun in his waistband.

Derrell Johnson, of 1119 McKenna Place, Uniondale, was standing on the corner of Locust Avenue and Oakley Street, police said, when plainclothes officers observed him trying to secure an object that was creating a bulge in his waistband.

When the officers identified themselves and tried to stop and question him, the suspect refused to stop and ran away on foot, police said.

During the chase, police saw Johnson remove a large black semiautomatic handgun from his waistband and drop it on Chester Street. The officers caught and tackled him, and took him into custody, police said. The weapon, a 9-mm Ruger, was recovered.

Johnson is charged with second and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon and resisting arrest, police said. He was to be arraigned Sunday at First District Court in Hempstead.
