The Floral Park bar owner accused of producing child pornography when he sexually abused teenage boys may have begun his activities in the 1980s, the FBI said Wednesday in a request to the public for help in the investigation.
In addition, the FBI said, far more children may have been abused by Vincent Calamia, 48, than earlier thought.
Calamia, owner of Frankie & Vinnie's bar on Jericho Turnpike, was arrested a week ago by agents who found in his Floral Park home 10 videos of him having sex with boys who appeared to be between 15 and 17 years old, a complaint filed by federal prosecutor Lara Treinis-Gatz says.
Officials said at the time that the activities began in 2005, and they are looking into whether Calamia drugged some victims before recording sex acts.
In a news release issued Wednesday, the FBI said further investigation has revealed "that instances of sexual abuse of children by Calamia may have occurred as early as 1982 and that the number of victims is significantly more than initially contemplated."
The bureau is asking that anyone with information call the FBI's hotline at 212-384-1000.
Calamia's attorney, William Wexler of North Babylon, declined to comment on the FBI's request for more information, as did prosecutor Treinis-Gatz.
A conviction on a charge of production of child pornography carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years in prison and a maximum of 30 years for each child involved, according to Eastern District spokesman Robert Nardoza.
When he was arrested, Calamia was not required to enter a plea in federal court in Central Islip. But sources have said that he insists he never engaged in sexual activity with underage boys.
Calamia has been held without bail since his arrest as a danger to the community.
His attorney asked that Calamia be held in protective custody because of the nature of the case.
Acting on a tip from an unidentified male who said that Calamia had sexually assaulted him regularly "beginning when [he] was less than 18 years old," agents and police raided Calamia's Floral Park home July 8 and found the videos, court papers show. The investigators also found conversations stored on Calamia's computer in which he discusses having sex with boys who say they are between 14 and 16 years old, the papers said.
