Wantagh man charged in fatal hit and run
A 47-year-old Wantagh man is under arrest after a hit-and-run crash Sunday morning that fatally injured a pedestrian in Uniondale, police said.
Nassau County police said Philip DiBenedetto of Tardy Lane was driving his 2002 Volkswagen Jetta when he struck and killed Jose Alvarado, 38, of Park Place in Roosevelt.
The crash occurred at 11:25 a.m. as Alvarado crossed Jerusalem Avenue, north to south, just east of Bedford Avenue.
Police said DiBenedetto not only struck Alvarado, he fled the scene, observed by "multiple witnesses, some of whom pursued his vehicle until the arrival of responding police units." Police said DiBenedetto drove evasively and nearly hit an officer from the First Precinct. The officer was not injured, police said.
Following an investigation, police said DiBenedetto was arrested outside his home at 5:40 p.m. and was charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident and first-degree reckless endangerment, both Class D felonies. He is scheduled for arraignment Monday in First District Court in Hempstead.
