Andrew Hess has added a unique notch to his belt: Heisman Award winner.
The senior at South High School in the Valley Stream Central High School District was named one of two New York State winners of the national Wendy's High School Heisman Award, which recognizes high schoolers who excel in the classroom, in athletics and in the community.
One male student and one female student are selected from each state, Wendy's officials said.
"This whole thing has been really exciting for me," said Hess, 17, who said he applied for the award in August and was notified recently of his win. "I didn't expect to get this far."
Hess is captain of his school's varsity baseball and volleyball teams and was named to the 2011 All-Conference and 2012 All-County teams for baseball.
Earlier this year, he also was named a National AP Scholar by the College Board and a National Merit Scholarship semifinalist.
Hess is also president of "The Falcon Report," a weekly news show on South High School's television station, and volunteers as a lighting and sound technician at various school events.
