Westbound traffic on the Long Island Expressway was delayed for about 90 minutes Tuesday as metal rods that fell onto the roadway were picked up, Nassau County police said.

Police closed three lanes of the expressway near between Exit 41 in Jericho and Exit 44 in Syosset from about 1:20 p.m. until 2:46 p.m., when the state Department of Transportation website and police announced the lanes had been reopened.

Police said the rods fell from a passing vehicle, forcing the closure of all but the high-occupancy vehicle lane as workers collected them.
