The return of the "Cannonball" highlights several Long Island Rail Road schedule changes taking effect next week.
The popular afternoon express service to the Hamptons, known as the "Cannonball," resumes Friday. For the second year in a row, the train, which departs at 4:06 p.m. on Fridays, leaves from Penn Station, instead of its longtime former origin of Hunterspoint Avenue in Queens. The LIRR will also begin running express westbound service from Montauk on Sunday evenings.
Other changes include the return of weekend service to and from Greenport, and of two summer-only weekend trains to and from Long Beach.
Track maintenance and construction work will affect schedules on other lines. Some weeknight Babylon trains and weekend Long Beach trains will be adjusted overnight by as much as 15 minutes.
Buses will replace trains between Mineola and Oyster Bay on the weekends of May 31-June 1 and June 14-15 to accommodate concrete tie installation work.
And some westbound, off-peak Ronkonkoma trains will be affected by tie replacement work beginning Monday.
