New Year's weekend DWI arrests top 100
More than 100 drivers were arrested on alcohol-related charges during an extended New Year's holiday weekend on Long Island, police agencies said Wednesday.
From 7 p.m. Friday to 7 a.m. on New Year's Day, Suffolk County police arrested 38 drivers and Nassau police arrested the same number, officials said. That includes 12 arrested in Suffolk and 16 in Nassau from 7 p.m. on New Year's Eve to 7 a.m. on Jan. 1, police said.
State police made 21 driving while intoxicated arrests from Dec. 28 through Jan. 1, including eight from 7 p.m. on New Year's Eve through New Year's Day, spokesman Frank Bandiero said.
The Suffolk County Sheriff's Office said deputies made four arrests from Friday to New Year's Day.
Last year, when Jan. 1 fell on Sunday, Nassau police made 35 arrests over an extended weekend period, ending Jan. 2. Last year's figures for Suffolk were not immediately available.
State police reported 12 arrests in 2011; sheriff's deputies made seven.
