Meet Morrison's, the gastropub successor to Red Fish in Plainview. Like its predecessor, it is owned by restaurateur Art Bloom, this time, with his daughter, manager Shelby Poole, and her husband, co-chef Harry Poole. Left Coast Kitchen & Cocktails is so assured, so comfortable in its skin, that it’s hard not to have a great time here. Certainly this is one of the South Shore’s hippest spots, with an open kitchen, lots of old-timey decorative accents and servers outfitted in the retro-lumberjack style of so many of-the-moment Brooklyn boites.

Barely a week old and Heirloom Tavern is already cooking. The spinoff of the Brass Rail (chef-owner Kent Monkan’s Locust Valley gastropub) was full on Friday night, with folks waiting at the bar by the time we left around 9 p.m.

The former site of Merrick’s Brooks & Porter steakhouse (2008-12) has a new tenant: The Savoy Tavern is owned by a group of first-time restaurant owners who hired noted New York restaurateur Gerard Renny to create the concept.

Kent Monkan, whose restaurant The Brass Rail is a popular destination in Locust Valley, has just opened a gastropub in Glen Head.
Heirloom Tavern, which opened Saturday, moved into the site at the railroad station vacated last year by Fork & Vine. Before he opened The Brass Rail, Monkan operated the New American spot, Heirloom, at the Locust Valley address.

Matthew Birnstill, a chef whose credentials include 1770 House in East Hampton and the former Red Dish in Commack, just took over the kitchen at Public House 49 in Patchogue. The gastropub has seen its share of kitchen changes since it first opened in 2009. In fact, Birnstill is the first full-time executive chef the restaurant has had in almost two years.
