4th C.D.: Differing statements on separate massacres
On Friday afternoon, with national attention focusing on the horrid events in Colorado, Legis. Francis X. Becker Jr. (R-Lynbrook) issued a statement seeking to tie White House policies on Guantanamo and Democratic support for them to the fatal bombing of Israelis in Bulgaria. His full statement is posted below.
Also Friday afternoon, Rep. Carolyn McCarthy held a news conference to send a gun-control message -- a salient issue since, as is well known, her husband was killed and her son severely injured in 1993 in the attacks by Colin Ferguson on the Long Island Rail Road. Her statement is below Becker's.
From the Republican challenger:
“With the New York Post revealing that the murder of Israeli tourists in Bulgaria may have been committed by Mehdi Ghezali, a suicide bomber freed from Guantanamo Bay where he was held due to long-suspected terrorist ties, we need to ask Carolyn why she and the president allowed him and other terrorists to be freed from United States custody.
“It’s appalling that Carolyn McCarthy and Barack Obama sprung Ghezali out, allowing him to knowingly murder Israelis in Bulgaria. Their actions are shameful and irreparably harm the security of United States and our allies, especially Israel.”
From the Democratic incumbent, regarding Colorado:
“The horrific nightmare of a mass shooting on innocent civilians in a crowded public place has, sadly, come true once again. I mourn alongside the people of Aurora for the many killed and injured and the countless family and friends whose lives, as a result of the consequences of this event, will be negatively affected for decades to come.
"The shooter should be brought to justice and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. But we as a nation should also not continue to ignore avenues to prevent tragedies like this from happening in the future.”
