Brookhaven: Alessi to step down as Democratic chairman

Look for Brookhaven Democratic chairman Marc Alessi to step down shortly.

No exact date has been set but the former state Assemblyman said he expects to leave within the next week or so. He said he told party officials earlier this year he intended to resign after the special elections were over because of increasing business commitments with his new firm Synchropet, which make biomedical scanning devices. He said his departure has nothing to do with last week’s highway superintendent’s loss.

Richard Schaffer, Suffolk Democratic chairman, said the leading contender to take over the party post is Anthony Parlatore, an attorney from Stony Brook.
