Cuomo watch: Decision due on Freeport Armory bill
[From the Cuomo Watch column in today's Spin Cycle page]
Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo has until midnight Wednesday to sign or veto a controversial bill determining the future of the former Freeport Armory.
The bill, championed by Assemb. Earlene Hooper (D-Hempstead), would transfer ownership of the old military facility to Cedarmore Corp., a non-profit that shares space with the Zion Cathedral Church of God in Christ, across the street from the armory.
Freeport Mayor Robert Kennedy is urging Cuomo to veto. He notes the village has long sought the property, possibly for heavy equipment management. Hooper favored that option too – until Kennedy beat Andrew Hardwick, a Hooper ally, in the last Freeport mayoral election.
