Democrats Pick Up One Congressional Seat

Democrats picked up one seat in the shrunken New York delegation to the U.S. House of Representiatives, according to AP's unofficial election results.

In the eight congressional district races considered competitive, Democrats won five races and the Republicans won three.

More importantly, in the three districts where the challenger won, two were Democrats and one was a Republican, the results show.

In the 18th district, Democrat Sean Patrick Maloney defeated freshman Republican Nan Hayworth, and in the 24th Democrat Dan Maffei reclaimed the seat he lost to Ann Marie Buerkle in 2010.

But in the largely Republican 27th district, GOP challenger Chris Collins beat Democrat Kathy Hochul, who pulled an upset in a special election.
