Ethics board opens up, just a bit

The state's Joint Commission on Public Ethics, long criticized by good-government groups for its closed-door sessions, is agreeing to open up -- a bit.

In a meeting Monday, Commissioner George Weissman recommended that the public get JCOPE's meeting agendas sooner. Some agendas are released just hours before a meeting.

Weissman's recommendation was a first met with silence by the board.

But it was eventually accepted during the brief part of the meeting that was open to the public. Now, the public will be able to see meeting agendas when they are received by commissioners -- which will often be days sooner than under the old practice.

Weissman is the appointee of Senate co-leader Dean Skelos (R-Rockville Centre).
