Although Nassau’s books continue to be watched by a financial control board, a three-year-old employee wage freeze continues to hold down workers’ salaries and County Executive Edward Mangano has never lifted a hiring freeze he announced several years ago, the county recently found room for one new high-level appointee.
Attorney Segal Magori was hired Dec. 30 to serve as counsel in the county housing department for $110,000 year, according to the county comptroller’s office.
Magori served as law clerk for State Supreme Court Justice Norman Janowitz but is perhaps better known in political circles as Bruce Blakeman’s girlfriend.
Blakeman, 58, who now lives in Long Beach, is a former presiding officer of the Nassau Legislature and a leading candidate to run as the Republican candidate for the congressional seat being vacated by Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-Mineola).
Blakeman is currently single. His former wife, Nancy Shevell, is now married to former Beatle, Sir Paul McCartney.
Both Blakeman and Magori Monday declined to comment on whether Blakeman helped her get the county job. A representative for Mangano did not return a request for comment.
Legis. David Denenberg (D-Merrick) complained, “Once again Mangano doesn’t have to comply with his own quote unquote hiring freeze.”
