Republican committees have now spent more than $1 million to help Bob Cohen try to win a critical open Senate seat in Westchester County, records show.

Cohen’s contest against Assemb. George Latimer (D-Rye) to replace retiring Sen. Suzi Oppenheimer (D-Mamaroneck) is one of eight battles analysts say will determine what party controls the Senate. Currently, Republicans hold a 33-29 advantage.

The Senate Republican Campaign has transferred $140,000 directly to Cohen’s campaign coffers and spent another $439,000 on his behalf, according to reports filed Friday with the state Board of Elections. Additionally, the Republican State Leadership Committee has spent another $595,000 on ads “opposing George Latimer,” according to the reports.

All told, that’s $1.174 million to aid Cohen.

The cash-strapped Democratic Senate Campaign Committee has spent $16,000 on Latimer’s behalf.

A recent poll showed Latimer leading Cohen by three percentage points.
