Well, Joe Lhota said all along he admired Barry Goldwater. Now he may get to emulate the Arizona senator's 1964 national electoral performance on a citywide level.

The latest NBC 4 New York/Wall Street Journal/Marist poll on the cusp of election week signals a total blowout for Bill de Blasio with 65 percent, to 22 percent for Lhota and 4 percent for Adolfo Carrion.

Which is not to say that Goldwater is viewed in historical hindsight with the harsh political judgment he faced at that time, especially given Lyndon B. Johnson's well-debated legacy.
